The roots of the band lie in Ghana. Except of the German musicians they were all members of the legendary Sappers Band. In part they have been playing together since childhood and were meeting again and again with different groups, both in Africa and in Europe. They are sought-after musicians at the appearances of international stars. Some played with Alpha Blondy, George Darko, Rocky Dawuni and Ziggy Marley.
The band was founded in December 1998, using the name Super Sappers, by Spunky, Modestus, Morton and Reinhard in Mönchengladbach. We untiringlyed through many clubs and pubs and celebrated first successes like the city Movement 2000. Guest musicians were invited to the individual performances, who quickly appreciated the unique family atmosphere around the gigs.
It is an honour for us to present here also those people, who at the moment, for various reasons, no longer stand together with us on stage. They are part of our history and always in our hearts.
In January 2001, we decided to change the name of the band, inspired by Johnny Clarke's "Just Call me African Roots". “African Roots” is the perfect description for our music, our lyrics and the philosophy we are living.
